Buttock Enhancement/Butt Lift

Round, ample, curvaceous bottoms are all the rage! Just like other trends, what makes the “perfect butt” has changed over time. Today’s preference for a plump, round derriere has the benefit of not only looking great in and of itself, but it also accentuates your waist, legs, and even breasts. Of course, buttock enhancement is not only for women—a flat, squarish, or sagging bottom can be addressed in both men and women with wonderful results.

Popularity is only growing for this procedure. Currently, there are more than 20,000 buttock enhancement procedures performed every year in the United States. One reason is that people were not born with the fullness they desire in their bottom. Dr. Gerstle has personally performed hundreds of these procedures, and we would love the opportunity to show you our before and after pictures and discuss how buttock enhancement can improve your entire body look and your overall confidence.

Buttock Enhancement Safety

Buttock enhancement procedures are typically very safe and have a very high degree of patient satisfaction. As with any surgery, there are outside risks of infection, bleeding, complications with anesthesia, or persistent pain, swelling, or changes in skin sensation. Dr. Gerstle will take a detailed medical history before the procedure to assess the degree of risk buttock enhancement may present in your particular case.

The Buttock Enhancement Procedure

You will undergo buttock enhancement under general anesthesia or IV sedation.

Butt Lift: A “Brazilian Butt Lift” (also called Safe Subcutaneous Buttock Augmentation or SSBA) consists of multiple steps: harvesting excess fat from other body areas via liposuction, cleaning of the extracted fat, and inserting it into strategically selected areas of the buttocks. Dr. Gerstle may decide to inject more fat than is necessary to achieve your desired size to allow for a certain amount of fat that might not take. A bonus of this surgery is that it may smooth out dimpled, irregular buttock skin.

Buttock Enhancement Post Op

Once the procedure is complete, you will spend a few hours in the recovery area and return home. You will follow up with Dr. Gerstle the next day to schedule any further necessary appointments. Of course, Dr. Gerstle is always available by cell phone or email in between office visits. We want to make sure you are comfortable with every step in the process.

It is important to follow all of our post-surgical guidelines carefully to avoid disturbing the incisions or your new anatomy. Do not take a shower for at least two days, and you will need to limit activity to walking and light activity such as housework for several weeks. You may return to work when you feel able, but remember that you will have to refrain from sitting, so adjustments may need to be made at your workplace. Pain will subside within a few days, and you should begin light walking at that time to avoid becoming overly stiff.

If you get a Brazilian butt lift, you will need to wait up to eight weeks before sitting! While this can seem like a long wait, we think you’ll find that it’s worth it. Keep plenty of pillows handy so that you can shift around and get comfortable with lying on your front. Body pillows, meditation cushions, bean bags, and other props can be very useful. When you have healed sufficiently to go back to sitting, a donut pillow will help in keeping excess pressure off of the incisions and transferred tissue or implants.

We will give you a compression garment to wear for at least four weeks after your surgery. Either over the counter or prescription pain medication will be useful in the first week after the procedure.

You will notice an obvious difference immediately after the surgery, but it will take some time for the swelling and bruising to subside. You will be able to see the results of the surgery in three to four months. By this time, you will have an accurate idea of how much fat retention you will have. Occasionally, the procedure may need to be repeated if insufficient fat takes hold to maintain your desired result.

Benefits of a Buttock Enhancement

Bringing volume to a congenitally small or flat backside or regenerating skin and tissue that is sagging and lifeless due to age, weight fluctuations, sun exposure, and other factors are all benefits of buttock enhancement.

Buttock enhancement can:

  • Enhance your self-image and self-confidence
  • Lift sagging buttocks
  • Sculpt a more sensual body profile
  • Create a more rounded, prominent appearance
  • Reshape a squarish or flat bottom
  • Enhance volume and projection of the buttocks
  • Balance out your overall body shape and proportions
  • Redistribute fat from other body areas
  • Improve your confidence in and out of clothing

The New You—Working With Dr. Gerstle

If you feel you may be a candidate for buttock enhancement, you and Dr. Gerstle will have a detailed consultation in which you discuss your medical history, undergo a physical exam, and consider your cosmetic goals. Our in-office state-of-the-art imaging system called “Mirror Imaging” is extremely useful—we take images of the area to be treated and digitally enhance them to show you the results you can expect to achieve. Once you have established your cosmetic goals, Dr. Gerstle will suggest the procedure that will best help you to achieve them. After you and Dr. Gerstle have established a surgical plan you are both happy with, we will schedule a date at our outpatient surgery center.

Buttock Enhancement FAQ

When can I go back to working out?

In order to protect the fat transfer, it may take as long as two months for you to be allowed to return to vigorous exercise, and even then you should take it slowly. Prior to this time, you should do light walking and activity to keep your muscles from stiffening and atrophying.

Do men get buttock enhancement surgery?

Yes! Dr. Gerstle generally alters his approach slightly with men, who tend to want a firm, muscular look rather than increased roundness. The benefit is that Dr. Gerstle will remove excess fat from your waist, back, or thighs, and use it to create contour on your bottom.

Is buttock enhancement painful?

No surgery comes without some element of discomfort. Most of the pain will come from the areas where you underwent the liposuction, as there will be some expected swelling and bruising for a few weeks that can be uncomfortable. There will also be some expected swelling and bruising of the buttock area, but you will receive pain medication that will decrease the discomfort significantly. The healing process is a slow and gradual one but once it is complete, most patients are very satisfied with their new contours.

What happens if I lose weight?

As long as your fat grafts to your buttocks have “taken” or healed into your buttocks well, your weight loss should not affect your buttock enhancement. If anything, you will have smaller areas surrounding your buttocks, which will only further enhance your new sculpted shape.

Is butt enhancement permanent?

In general, yes, butt enhancement should last indefinitely. With fat transfer, you will know after several months whether the transferred fat has survived the procedure. Radical shifts in weight can also cause issues with a previously stable buttock enhancement, so it is best to maintain your weight in the years following the surgery.

What conditions can be addressed by buttock enhancement?

Buttocks that are flat, lack volume, saggy, or too small for the rest of your body are common conditions that are addressed by buttock enhancement.

When will I see the final results of a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Once the swelling and bruising subside, you will continue to heal and your new shape will continue to settle over the course of several months. Expect to see the final result in four to six months, although you will see a dramatic change right away.

Is buttock enhancement generally a safe surgery?

Yes, buttock enhancement is one of the safest plastic surgery procedures. Non-smokers at a healthy overall weight and with a stable and realistic attitude are excellent candidates for the procedure.
