Breast Enhancement in Lexington, KY

Breasts! We all seem to have our preferences, whether we are thinking about our own body or our partner’s body. All of our preferences are, of course, subjective. There is no one perfect breast size, and tastes trend differently in different cultures and parts of the world as well.

Breast enhancement is a specialty of Lexington, Kentucky plastic surgeon Theo Gerstle, M.D. There are many ways to enhance the contour of a breast, including breast augmentation of a congenitally small breast with breast implants, reshaping large breasts with breast reduction, or rearranging the tissues of an aging breast to create a more youthful appearance with a breast lift. Another important note to remember is that breast surgery is also for men who suffer from gynecomastia, or the enlargement of male breast tissue. And of course, breast reconstruction can be a vital aid in healing the emotional and psychological scars that can result following breast cancer treatment.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, or breast implant surgery, is the procedure that adds volume, firmness to a sagging or undersized chest. Working with your natural frame, we want to bring your breasts into harmony with the rest of your figure. Not only will a larger cup size make you feel more confident and happy in your clothes, breasts that balance your hips and emphasize your waist will balance out your overall body symmetry and proportion.

While you will have implants of various shapes and sizes to choose from, Dr. Gerstle is an expert when it comes to breast augmentation and can aid greatly in ensuring that your choice will make you happy for many years to come. Choosing the right size and type of implant is the key to the longevity of the procedure. Too large, and in time your breasts will likely sag or stretch the supporting skin and tissues; too small and you may find that your breasts become hollowed out at the top in the years ahead.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is sometimes combined with breast augmentation with implants, but not always, and each has its specific purpose. While you may have retained the volume in your breasts that you desire, age, gravity, sun exposure, weight fluctuations, genetics, and pregnancy and breastfeeding can all contribute to a lack of buoyancy or a downward shift that has increased over time. Breast lift (or mastopexy) surgery can correct this issue to a great degree, removing excess skin, restoring the lost upward projection you once had, and even resizing the areola . A breast lift can help restore the youthful breasts you once had, while at the same time restoring your self-confidence, whether on the beach or in the boardroom.

Breast Reduction

No woman who has lived through years or even decades of sore breasts, unwanted attention, difficulty finding clothes that fit, and painful and restricted workouts has a sense of humor about being told that large breasts are “a good problem to have.” Women who feel that their breasts are too large just want relief, and that’s why breast reduction surgery is truly a godsend for so many.

Depending on the amount of tissue to be removed and other factors affecting the complexity of the surgery, you may undergo liposuction and/or surgical excision of fat to reduce your breast size. Part of the procedure may also include repositioning the nipple so that it sits higher on the breast. Recovery from this surgery can take several weeks, at which point you will be ready to slowly begin resuming your regular exercise and other active pursuits.

Breast Reconstruction

It can take time to adjust emotionally and psychologically following the trauma of a breast cancer diagnosis. We are here to support you through the journey of breast reconstruction, whether it begins at the same time as your mastectomy or in the months or years ahead. Breast reconstruction can help you adjust to a single or double mastectomy, reassuring you that your femininity is not lost and that you can still enjoy the look and feel of your body as you did previously.

Male Breast Reduction

No man wants to feel embarrassed or ashamed to go shirtless! Whether on the beach in the summer, on the basketball court, or cooking out for friends, having to cover up can be downright uncomfortable. For men who are dissatisfied with the look of their chest, there is no longer a reason to delay taking action. The methods for gynecomastia, or male breast reduction, have become simplified and refined, and are now more effective than ever. A straightforward case of removing some excess fat may be achievable by liposuction alone, while more complex cases may require removal of excess tissue that has become saggy and even areolar reduction. Regardless of the type of surgery that you and Dr. Gerstle decide on, you can be assured that a tighter, stronger, more masculine looking chest can be yours in short order.

Breast Enhancement General FAQ

When can I return to vigorous activity or contact sports following breast enhancement surgery?

Following most types of breast enhancement (except for breast reconstruction), you should be able to return to workouts and sports beginning after one to two months.

What are the pros and cons of breast augmentation using implants?

Implant surgery is as popular as it is for a good reason: Most women are very satisfied with the results. They feel sexier, fuller, more womanly. At the same time, there are drawbacks, and these must be considered, and of course mitigated as far as possible. Getting the right sized implants for your size and frame is vital to the longevity of the procedure. Complications such as infection, scar tissue, shifting of the implants, and even breakage can occur. And because breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure, any revisions that must be done in the future could add unwanted additional costs. However, the day to day enjoyment that women tend to experience from their enhanced breasts generally make any complications that arise worthwhile to address and repair.

Will I look natural after breast enhancement surgery?

This is a common question. The key to a natural look with breast implants is choosing the size that works for your frame, weight, and overall body type. A breast lift will leave some visible scars, but we will make the breasts as symmetrical as possible and define a shape that is very natural. Similarly, both female and male breast reduction simply remove tissue, so apart from some minor scars, you will look very natural. A breast reconstruction is a little different, as the entire breast may need to be built from scratch. While they may not look exactly like your natural breasts, they give most women a great deal of emotional reassurance after a mastectomy.

Do I need a breast lift or breast implants? Or both?

A breast lift is appropriate when tissues have become lax and skin is droopy and wrinkled. The effects of breastfeeding, dramatic weight gain and loss, or simply aging can create the need to tighten and lift the breasts and nipples. Breast implants, of course, will increase the volume in the breasts using a silicone or saline implant behind the natural breast tissue. A breast implant will generally not solve the problem of sagging breasts, nor will a breast lift generally increase the volume of the breast. Sometimes the two surgeries are combined in order to create a lifted, fuller chest.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast enhancement surgery?

This depends. You will generally be able to breastfeed following a breast lift or breast reduction surgery if you were capable of doing so before the surgery. Similarly, following breast implant placement, you will most likely be able to breastfeed, although there is a chance that it will affect your milk production. There is no evidence that breastfeeding causes damage to implants, so rest assured that you will likely be able to nurse normally or even pump if necessary. If you plan on getting pregnant in the future, speak with Dr. Gerstle about your concerns.

Can breast enhancement be combined with other plastic surgery procedures?

Yes, this is a common choice for our patients. A tummy tuck, liposuction, and even the coveted “mommy makeover” can all be combined with your choice of breast enhancement.

Is breast enhancement surgery worth it?

While any surgical procedure carries risks and potential side effects, breast enhancement surgery seems to be an almost universal positive for those who undergo it, whichever type is relevant to them. Whether you are starting out with breasts that you feel are too small or too big, correcting the issue seems to have far reaching positive consequences.
