Experience Kentucky’s Highest Rated Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery Services
There are multiple reasons why a woman may choose to undergo labiaplasty. After childbirth, this area can become stretched and misshapen. Other women can be dissatisfied with the labial size or shape they were born with, and the sagging that comes with age can be a factor as well. Whatever the cause, oversized or unsightly labial tissue can affect your confidence in swimwear, tights and leggings, and in maintaining a healthy sex life. It can even be a cause of painful intercourse.
The goal of labiaplasty is to create visual harmony between the outer and inner lips of the labia. This can include altering the size and shape of the labia majora, labia minora, and the clitoral hood. There are also procedures, known as vaginal rejuvenation or vaginoplasty, available that can tighten the inner vaginal canal following childbirth, restoring tone and sexual function to the interior of the vagina.

Labiaplasty Safety
Labiaplasty is typically a safe, moderately painful procedure that is accomplished quickly and has a relatively short period of healing. Nearly 100 percent of our patients who’ve opted for labiaplasty are happy with the result. The minor swelling and pain that can result over the days following labiaplasty are typically easily managed with prescription pain medication.
Of course, all surgical interventions come with some risk including that of infection, bleeding, and hematoma. An overly aggressive labial reduction can cause lasting damage, including causing dryness, pain with sexual intercourse, and scarring. Dr. Gerstle has performed hundreds of labiaplasties over the years and knows how to create a balanced, harmonious look without going too far.
While there is an outside chance that sensation could be reduced during sexual intercourse, the usual outcome is that sensation and sexual satisfaction are improved after labiaplasty. There are incidences of flap necrosis, or tissue death, after a wedge resection, but Dr. Gerstle has never encountered this problem in any of his patients.
The Labiaplasty Procedure
A labiaplasty can typically be completed in about an hour under local anesthesia.
You will be cleared to return home on the same day of the surgery. Please ensure that there is someone available to take you home..
Labiaplasty Post Op
You will likely experience some pain and swelling following labiaplasty. Most of the swelling should resolve within a week following the surgery. Be sure to wear loose clothing to avoid irritating the already swollen area.
Plan to take about a week off from work to recover following the surgery. Because sitting for long periods of time can put pressure on the sutures and disrupt healing, we recommend trading off standing and lying on your back rather than sitting in chairs. Lying on an incline with your bottom higher than your head can also relieve pressure on the affected area and decrease swelling.
Dr. Gerstle recommends avoiding sexual activity, vigorous exercise, tub baths, and swimming for four to six weeks after the surgery.

The New You—Working With Dr. Gerstle
We will be happy to welcome you to our office for a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Gerstle. First you will discuss your medical history and cosmetic goals. It is important to communicate any physical discomfort you might have with your current anatomy. A look through our before and after pictures can help you to pinpoint the look that will work for you. Remember that each woman has her own vision of what she would like her post-op look to be, and the doctor can accommodate your wishes. Typically, women prefer to have the labia minora shortened so that they are completely hidden by the labia majora; asymmetries of the labia majora are likewise often a target of this procedure. A clitoral hood reduction reduces the amount of tissue surrounding the clitoris.
After a thorough physical exam, Dr. Gerstle will present the approach he will take to improving the look of your labia and surrounding area. If you are interested in combining labiaplasty with vaginal rejuvenation or another complementary procedure, he will take that into consideration and get you scheduled for the procedure.
Labiaplasty FAQ
Why do women choose to undergo labiaplasty?
Enlarged labial tissue can cause irritation, chafing, or just sheer annoyance for some women. For women who feel that their labia are unsightly, this can be psychologically disturbing, even leading to avoidance of sexual relations. There is no one reason, or no “good” reason to have labiaplasty. If it feels right for you, we will support you in this decision and find a surgical solution that works for you.
Is labiaplasty a common procedure?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that the demand for labiaplasty is increasing all the time, with more than 10,000 procedures being done every year in the United States. The prevalence of the Brazilian wax, which reveals areas of the female genitalia that had been previously covered in hair, may be responsible for the rise in interest in improving the look of the labia.
Who is a good candidate for labiaplasty?
There are several conditions that can create the need or desire for labiaplasty. You may have always been dissatisfied with the size or shape of your labial folds, or they may have changed after childbirth. They may get in the way of certain activities or catch on some types of clothing. Their size and shape could even be making intercourse or tampon insertion painful.
Is labiaplasty painful?
You will likely experience some minor to moderate pain, swelling, or bruising post procedure, but generally speaking, labiaplasty is not particularly painful. The pain is similar to falling on a balance beam. You should expect any pain or swelling to mostly resolve within a few days of the surgery.
Is labiaplasty the same as vaginal rejuvenation?
No, these are different but related procedures. Labiaplasty is mainly a cosmetic treatment that reduces and reshapes the vaginal lips as necessary. It is an external treatment only. Vaginal rejuvenation (or vaginoplasty) may include labiaplasty, but it focuses on the internal area of the vagina to tighten an overstretched vaginal canal following childbirth. Vaginal rejuvenation can restore both function and sensation. Vaginal rejuvenation can even be used to address issues of incontinence.
Is urination after labiaplasty difficult?
You may feel some burning during urination for a few days following labiaplasty. If you are constipated, take a stool softener to avoid straining and disturbing the incisions that are beginning to heal.
How can I care for the vaginal area following labiaplasty?
Keep the area clean by rinsing the area with warm water on a daily basis following each urination. Do not take baths, however. Avoid sitting for an extended period of time, which can put pressure on the area that the body is trying to heal. A small amount of bleeding is normal, but if the incision opens or pus forms, call our office. Do not drink alcohol while you are taking pain medication, as these substances can interact.
When can I return to my normal activities following labiaplasty?
Plan to take a few days off to rest and recuperate following labiaplasty. You should be able to walk around gently on the day of the surgery. If you work at a desk, make plans to stand or work in a reclined position on a laptop until your incisions heal sufficiently that sitting will not put them at risk. Dr. Gerstle will clear you to return to a light workout within a month, but you may have to put sexual intercourse on hold for up to two months while you heal fully.
Will labiaplasty scars be noticeable?
No, the scars will be hidden—only you will know that a surgical procedure has taken place.
How does labiaplasty affect a future pregnancy?
A labiaplasty will not affect your ability to deliver a baby, nor will the incision sites be disturbed when you give birth if you have healed sufficiently. However, pregnancy can affect the size or shape of the labia, so you may wish to wait on a labiaplasty until you’ve had your last child.
Will labiaplasty reduce sensation during intercourse?
Reduced sensation is a possible but unlikely outcome of labiaplasty. Do not panic if you experience numbness at first; this is normal and it should recede within a few days to a few weeks.
How common is it to have excess labial tissue?
Enlarged and asymmetrical labia is a common condition. It only becomes a problem if it is irritating or causes you to have a negative experience of your body.
