Microneedling

Professional Microneedling & Collagen Induction Therapy Services available in Kentucky

Like other popular skin treatments, microneedling is designed to take advantage of the body’s healing response to improve skin firmness and tone. Microneedling is a multipurpose treatment that can address a variety of concerns. Sometimes also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), it is popular with celebrities and is considered one of the fastest-growing skin treatments.

Concerns that can be addressed by this simple procedure include acne scars, fine lines, large pores, poor skin texture, skin laxity, and stretch marks, all without downtime after treatment.

Microneedling Results

Due to the way microneedling works, you will see your skin plump up and become more radiant almost immediately. This is because of the inflammation that microneedling causes and the superficial swelling. The true impact and efficacy of microneedling comes from your skin healing, however, so sometimes people see the most dramatic results after a few sessions. A study done in 2008 supports this, showing that skin that was treated with four microneedling sessions each spaced approximately one month apart produced a nearly 400% increase in skin collagen and elastin six months after the four microneedling treatment sessions were completed.

Microneedling Recovery

There is no downtime associated with most microneedling treatments, although patients can expect the treatment area to look pink or flush for about a day. Complete recovery instructions will be provided by Lexington Plastic Surgery staff. Immediately after treatment, mineral makeup is suggested due to its hypoallergenic and sterile properties.

Patients can typically resume wearing their normal makeup in about 4 days.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling uses tiny needles and the body’s healing response to create tighter, firmer, and healthier skin. The many sterilized microneedles of the device perforate the skin which forces the body to respond in a way that is beneficial for improving skin firmness and tone.

However, even at a very surface level, old, damaged cells are eliminated during treatment, which allows healthier cells to take their place. Your skin feels the pricks like they are pinpricks, and then your body rushes to heal these spots.

Collagen, which is an essential protein that helps to keep skin looking youthful, will increase in production in the treatment area, which firms the skin and restores elasticity, as well as creates a new youthful appearance. Over time collagen will naturally decline due to aging, which adds to wrinkles. You can lose collagen due to other factors besides natural aging as well, such as scarring from acne, stretch marks, or general scarring.

Dating back to 1995, microneedling is now considered a proven and standard treatment for wrinkles, fine lines, and both sun damage and stretch marks.

Because the needles are small and spread over an area there is redness, but not the appearance of punctures or cuts. It is a minimally invasive treatment.

While microneedling is usually done on the face, it can also be used on other parts. It can be used to treat everything from acne scars to hair loss, from your scalp to your ankles to help remedy scars, increase collagen production as mentioned above, or even stimulate hair growth. Sometimes microneedling will be used in addition to other cosmetic options like the dermal fillers we also offer.
