As we age, our bodies lose both volume and elasticity. On the face, years of sun exposure, facial movement and gravity can cause the lip to begin to sag and look thinned and tired. Other people simply were born with a smaller upper lip and wish they had more volume in that area. There are several ways that Dr. Gerstle can help restore the youthful appearance and volume to the lip. He can either inject collagen or your own fat, or can surgically recontour the lip with or without an implant as part of a more invasive facial rejuvenation technique. Less invasive options to help with lines and sagging appearance can be performed with laser treatments, BOTOX®, chemical peels and dermabrasion.

Restoring a youthful appearance to the lip
Enhancing a congenitally small lip
Creating a pouty, sultry appearance
You and Dr. Gerstle will have a detailed consulation beginning with your medical history and physical exam. After that, the two of you will discuss your cosmetic goals and Dr. Gerstle’s recommendations on how to best help you to achieve those goals.
If the two of you decide to treat with chemical peels, dermabrasion , BOTOX® or injectable fillers, you will schedule an office visit and have the procedure done within an hour.
If the two of you decide on a more invasive therapy, such as fat grafting (injecting fat into the lips and or area around the mouth), or the placement of an implant, Dr. Gerstle will usually perform the procedure under local anesthetic with mild sedation in his private office surgical suite.
It is normal to have some bruising after the procedure, with more invasive procedures understandably having more swelling and bruising than the less invasive techniques. You can usually return to work the following day without a problem and resume normal activities as you feel comfortable. We advise staying out of the sun for the first 48 hours after the procedure. You will follow up with Dr. Gerstle within the first week or as necessary depending on how invasive your enhancement was. Of course, Dr. Gerstle is always available via cell phone and email for any immediate questions or concerns.
How large are the scars after getting a lip implant or lip lift?
Lip implants are placed under small incisions in the corners of the mouth and the lip lift incisions are also tiny. Dr. Gerstle places the incisions discreetly along your natural skin folds so that they are barely noticeable after healing.
How long do injectables last?
Different injectables last for different amounts of time. BOTOX® injectables last a few months and need to be repeated to obtain the desired result. Injectable fillers such as Restylane® and Juvéderm® last between 6-12 months. If you choose facial fat grafting, you can expect to keep most of the injected fullness for years. Of course, a surgically placed implant will keep the desired effect that is permanent unless the implant is removed.
